Basemark Expands Operations in America

Positioned as the Leading Graphics and Compute Experts, Basemark Gains Several Large Customers in Automotive Market in U.S.

Helsinki, Finland, June 5th, 2018 – Basemark announced today it has established a wholly owned subsidiary in U.S. and already has local team supporting customers there. In addition to its strong customer base in semiconductor companies such as Intel, NVIDIA and Qualcomm, the company has made strong inroads to the automotive industry key players, particularly in the Detroit area.

Basemark has witnessed strong demand for its technology and services, especially in the automotive sector, which is undergoing a substantial transformation towards digitalization with increasing need for optimized graphics and compute performance in digital instrument clusters, autonomous driving, machine vision, augmented reality and other Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS). Basemark’s flagship product, Rocksolid Engine, accelerates the processing of both graphics and compute algorithms. In tightly resource constrained systems, such as many found in automotive, performance enhancements have been up to 10 times compared to the situation before.

“Not many consumers may realize it, but the majority of the cars bought this year and for the next few years, feature slower processors that were announced over 5 years ago, e.g. NXP i.MX 6. The demands from designers often times grossly overshoot the capability of the older graphics hardware. This is where graphics experts like Basemark come in. To get the car displays of today as well as the augmented reality displays of the future to work fluidly and without glitches, a company needs special embedded graphics performance expertise.” Said Anshel Sag, Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy

Buoyed by strong enterprise customer demand and robust financial performance, the company has scaled up its operations worldwide. Basemark posted solid revenue growth and positive net income financial results for its second full operational year in 2017. The company expects its global revenue growth rate accelerate from 30% in 2017 to over 80% in 2018 while maintaining positive net income.

Basemark is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, a well-known location for excellence in graphics and game development. Majority of the company’s personnel works in the Helsinki office while dedicated teams for various customers work in or near customer sites. All in all, the company now employs 40 people around the world.

Basemark® Launches Rocksolid™ Graphics Solution for Industrial Use

Graphics Engine for Hardware and Software Developers Requiring Mission Critical, Low Power and High Performance Rendering

Helsinki, Finland, May 30, 2017 – Basemark proudly launches Rocksolid, a high performance and high availability graphics rendering solution for industrial applications. With Rocksolid, customers can achieve typically 2X to 3X performance increases for their existing applications. In some cases, up to 10X performance increases have been attained[1].

Various customer segments stand to benefit from the additional performance brought about by Rocksolid. Developers of operating systems and manufacturers of Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR) headwear are now able to handle rendering with minimal start-up time, latency and resource consumption. Application developers are able to achieve higher frame rates, better responsiveness as well as they are able to utilize more detailed models to achieve better looking visuals. For example, a real-world CAD model resulted in over double the FPS, one seventh the CPU utilization and less than one half the power consumption when rendered with Rocksolid.[2]

Rocksolid features a converter that reads existing content, e.g. a Unity3D project, and converts it to a format usable by Rocksolid Engine. Hence, customers do not need to learn yet another tool but instead can continue using content authoring tools of their choice.

The Rocksolid Engine itself stems from Basemark’s established development of industry standard graphics benchmarks. Rocksolid Engine is the engine used in Basemark’s benchmark products, such as Basemark GPU Vulkan. Virtually every major SoC and GPU company has been part of the development of these benchmarks, therefore helping Basemark to optimize the performance for various SoC architectures. For more information, see https://www.basemark.com. The codebase is exceptionally compact and streamlined, written on C++ and provides an API for application developers to integrate it as part of their existing environment.

[1] In a customer project completed by Basemark on April 13, 2017, the original application running on Unity3D fetched 40 frames per second on a PC with Intel Core i7-6700K, 16G DDR4 and NVIDIA GTX 1080. After converting to Rocksolid Engine, the same application fetched 450 FPS on a laptop with NVIDIA 980M. The application was a complex building CAD model with over 1.2 million vertexes per frame.

[2] In another customer pilot completed by Basemark on February 22, 2017, a CAD application consumes only 2% of the CPU resources of a Google Pixel Phone when run on Rocksolid. In contrast, the same workload run on Unity3D consumed 14% of the CPU resources. Power consumption figures were 1.5W and 3.7W, respectively. Running with vsync off, Rocksolid fetched 134 FPS while Unity3D fetched 72 FPS. Both Rocksolid and Unity3D utilized Vulkan graphics API. The scene consisted of a Revit CAD building model with 2,561,673 vertex count per frame. Full details on request.

World’s First Comprehensive VR Benchmark

VRScore PC Enables Objective Performance And Latency Comparisons of VR headsets, PCs and Laptops

Helsinki, Finland, January 30, 2017 – Basemark today proudly launched VRScore PC, the world’s first VR benchmark with DirectX 12 support. VRScore PC measures PC and Head Mounted Display (HMD) rendering performance and latency in Virtual Reality (VR) applications. VRScore PC also supports DirectX 11, thereby enabling more wide ranging comparisons with PCs and HMDs that do not support DirectX 12.

VRScore-DX11

With VRScore PC, users can evaluate how their computer performs with different HMDs with the help of a professionally designed VR application that utilizes real-world game engine and real-world game programming techniques. Furthermore, users can accurately measure the latency of the HMD by utilizing a patent pending VRTrek measurement device by Basemark. After the analysis, users can connect to Power Board, an online results service, to compare their own results against those of other systems.

vrscore-vrtrek

“Evaluating how good a VR system is, can only be done by keeping tabs on the latency because people notice even the smallest of delays between what’s displayed on the screen and what the brain expects. If there’s a disconnect, most people report they get nauseated or worse.” Said Jon Peddie, President and founder of Jon Peddie Research. “We are very excited to finally receive a robust tool for measuring latency in the form of Basemark’s VRScore and VRTrek. This enables the industry to set standards and achieve ever better functioning VR systems.”

In order to develop an objective benchmark, Basemark worked in close cooperation with key industry players, including AMD, Intel and NVIDIA. Furthermore, VRScore PC utilizes a real-world game engine, CRYENGINE by Crytek GmbH and features a Cinematic VR Experience with the Codename: Skyharbor. Sky Harbor gives us glimpse of what we can expect in the future of animated entertainment, pushing the boundary of realtime VR – powered with CRYENGINE V.
